I am creating this journal to chronicle the years and years of psychological and emotional abuse I suffered as the victim of a sociopath -- someone I had considered to be one of my best friends.

My purpose in writing this is for my own healing & mental health, which he was instrumental in subtly chipping away at and eroding over the course of the 15 years that I've known him. He is the acid rain of self-esteem. He used me and discarded me like a piece of trash.

I've been silent about most of it for a long time and I'm tired of keeping my mouth shut - especially when I realize that there is so much about him that his other friends don't know, things that I assumed they DID know.

I am also writing it to help others who are in potentially abusive relationships to learn to recognize the signs of a sociopath. According to some statistics, as found in Martha Stout's book, The Sociopath Next Door, sociopathic behavior is found in 4% of the general population - one in twenty-five people. This means everyone WILL encounter a sociopath at some point in his or her life.

Not everyone will be affected very deeply -- the sociopath you know could be one of your old teachers, your pastor, your local police officer, or someone else with which you'd have only a passing acquaintance. However, some of us have spent years at the mercy of sociopathic individuals who sadistically infiltrated our lives, disguised themselves to fool us into caring about or even loving them, then used us up and left us for dead.

-His favorite band is the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, which he is somewhat obsessive about;
-He has several tattoos, mostly on his lower arms, many of them have to do with the Bosstones;
-He has a minor case of muscular dystrophy which you probably would never notice unless he tells you about it; he wears leg braces on his lower legs which are not usually visible.
